Southern Wood Council Award - April 2026

The New Zealand Institute of Forestry Foundation and the Southern Wood Council are pleased to announce Jamie Sim as the recipient of the 2026 Southern Wood Council Undergraduate Scholarship.

This scholarship, funded by the Southern Wood Council, provides $2000 per year for three years toward undergraduate study in Forestry at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury, and is targeted at students with a connection to the Otago, Southland or South Canterbury regions.
 
The Southern Wood Council Inc (SWC) was established in 2001 to promote, encourage and coordinate the sustainable economic development of the forest products industry in the Otago and Southland (and South Canterbury) regions of New Zealand. The SWC includes all major forest owners within the region, forest managers, larger wood processing and manufacturing companies, port authorities and representatives from local councils, industry training and Government organisations.
 
Jamie was born and raised in Oamaru and is in his second year of study towards a Bachelor of Forestry Science at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury. Jamie spent his University and High School holidays carrying out silvicultural work including planting, thinning and spot spraying across Otago. He is a keen outdoorsman hunting, rock climbing , mountain biking and skiing in his spare time. He has a strong academic record to date and is involved in community volunteer groups track building, cleaning up rubbish and planting native trees in the region.
