Hawkes Bay Forestry Group Scholarship
This scholarship is to support and encourage Hawkes Bay residents to studying an undergraduate tertiary qualification in forestry. It is funded by the Hawkes Bay Forestry Group (HBFG) and supported by the Forest and Wood Foundation (FWF).

New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
Usually domiciled in the Hawkes Bay Region
Enrolled in one of the following tertiary level forestry qualifications
New Zealand Diploma in Forest Management, Turanga Ararau
Bachelor of Forestry Science, University of Canterbury
Bachelor of Forest Engineering, University of Canterbury

One scholarship is available annually. If there are no suitably eligible applicants, the scholarship may not be awarded in that year.
Selection process
Selection Process
Applications will be appraised by the FWF Trustees.
The FWF will notify the HBFG of all eligible applicants and make a recommendation on which applicant(s) best meet the selection criteria.
The HBFG may decide to interview applicants to help decide the successful awardee.
Final decision on which applicant the scholarship will be awarded to is at the sole discretion of the HBFG.
It is intended that all applicants will be contacted by the end of October with the outcome of their application.your application and clearly explains your ideas.
Value and payment schedule
Payment of the scholarship will be to the appointed NZ bank account of the successful awardee.
The scholarship will be paid in two instalments:
The first payment of $2,500 will be made in March 2027, upon the recipient providing evidence of enrolment in an accepted course of study.
The second payment of $2,500 will be made when the recipient provides evidence of successfully completing the supported year of study.
Tenability and Rentention Criteria
The scholarship must be taken up in the 2027 academic year.
The scholarship is tenable by full-time students enrolled and remaining enrolled in any one of the approved courses of study only.
With the permission of the HBFG, but not otherwise, the scholarship is co-tenable with any other award, unless the conditions of the other award preclude this
If, during tenure, the recipient’s enrolment no longer meets the following conditions, the scholarship may be withdrawn, and any paid funds may be recovered.
successfully passing the requirements of each academic year
adherence to the University’s statutes, regulations, policies, and rules.
Relationship between HBFG and successful awardees
The HBFG seeks to foster an ongoing interest in the awardee’s progress through their study. Subject to suitable positions being available, as part of this and to support the completion of the awardees degree requirements, the HBFG will endeavour to find internship opportunities during university summer break for successful awardees.
Publicity
In applying for the award, applicants consent be identified on the HBFG and FWF websites and social media if they are awarded the scholarship.
Awardees may be asked to provide a photo and short bio for publicity and promotional purposes through HBFG and FWF.
Background information
HBFG was established in 2015 to enhance the role of commercial forestry and wood processing in Hawkes Bay. Membership comprises most commercial forest owners in the region and the Hawkes Bay Regional Council which is also a significant forest owner. HBFG is also a collective voice for promoting best practice and for responding to issues, challenges and opportunities affecting the industry.
HBFG is keen to encourage people to want to work in forestry.
Hawkes Bay needs capable people to manage commercial forests to ensure their profitability and ongoing contribution to our regional economy, community, and environment. Viable tree plantations are now widely accepted as an essential complement to climate change mitigation, soil conservation, and for enhancing habitat for native species.
